Introduction to the Faculty
The Faculty of Language and Literature stands as one of the most dynamic and pivotal academic entities at the University of Kurdistan. It officially commenced its independent operations in October 2012, following its separation from the Faculty of Literature and Humanities. Dedicated to the fields of linguistics, literature, and language education, the Faculty comprises departments in Persian, Kurdish, Arabic, and English languages, playing a crucial role in the cultural and literary development of the region. Given the undeniable importance of language in the transfer of knowledge, the understanding of diverse cultures and civilizations, and the establishment of political, cultural, and economic relations among nations, the Faculty assumes a significant role in realizing these objectives and fostering deeper engagement with society.
Currently, the Faculty of Language and Literature consists of four academic departments offering degrees at various levels:
Department of Kurdish Language and Literature: Bachelor’s degree (B.A.).Department of Arabic Language and Literature: Bachelor’s (B.A.), Master’s (M.A.), and Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees.
Department of Persian Language and Literature: Bachelor’s (B.A.), Master’s (M.A.), and Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees.
Department of English Language and Linguistics: Offering three distinct tracks:
English Language and Literature (B.A., M.A., Ph.D.)
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) (B.A., M.A.)
Linguistics (M.A.)

Objectives of the Faculty of Language and Literature:
1. Educational Objectives:
Enhancing the linguistic and literary proficiency of students in Persian, Kurdish, Arabic, and English.Strengthening the four core language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
Facilitating in-depth knowledge of classical and contemporary literature and the analysis of distinguished literary works.
Cultivating creativity and critical thinking through the critique and analysis of literary texts.
Training qualified instructors for teaching language and literature at various educational levels.
Equipping students with the skills necessary for editing scientific articles and books.
2. Research Objectives:
Developing fundamental and applied research in linguistics, literary criticism, text analysis, and translation studies.Examining and analyzing literary movements within the target languages.
Preserving and revitalizing literary heritage, including manuscripts, folklore, and oral literature.
Promoting comparative research among Persian, Kurdish, Arabic, and English literatures.
Encouraging interdisciplinary research linking literature with philosophy, sociology, and psychology.
3. Cultural and Social Objectives:
Expanding cultural interactions through the translation and introduction of world literature.Strengthening national and cultural identity through the study and promotion of Persian and Kurdish literature.
Creating an appropriate platform for literary and cultural dialogue with national, regional, and global universities and scientific centers.
Supporting the activities of scientific associations and student literary societies.
4. Applied and Professional Objectives:
Preparing students for careers in teaching, translation, authorship, editing, and media.Establishing liaisons with cultural institutions and publishing houses to expand employment opportunities for graduates.
