This work is a Persian translation and critical study of al-Īḍāḥ fī ʿUlūm al-Balāghah by al-Khaṭīb al-Qazwīnī. This book is itself a commentary on the author's own Talkhīṣ al-Miftāḥ, which in turn is an abridgment of Miftāḥ al-ʿUlūm by al-Sakākī. Al-Īḍāḥ, authored by Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUmar, known as al-Khaṭīb al-Qazwīnī (d. 739 AH), is considered one of the most important sources in Arabic rhetoric and is indispensable for researchers and students of Arabic literature. However, unlike the Talkhīṣ, this work has not received as much attention from rhetoricians, commentators, and glossators. Although al-Īḍāḥ is an independent work, it can also be regarded as an expanded commentary on the Talkhīṣ, written by the author himself, to which he added numerous examples and explanations. The Talkhīṣ, as its name suggests, is a summary of the rhetoric section of Miftāḥ al-ʿUlūm by Abū Yaʿqūb Yūsuf ibn Abī Bakr al-Sakākī (d. 626 AH). In his introduction to al-Īḍāḥ, al-Qazwīnī explicitly states that, where necessary, he has cited the opinions of ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Jurjānī, author of the two seminal works Dalāʾil al-Iʿjāz and Asrār al-Balāghah, as well as the views of al-Sakākī in Miftāḥ al-ʿUlūm and other rhetoricians, while also adding his own perspective.

As I noted in the introduction to the translation and study of the Maʿānī section of al-Īḍāḥ (published in late 2014), the book is superior to other commentaries and glosses on the Talkhīṣ in two respects: first, the author himself realized the shortcomings of Talkhīṣ al-Miftāḥ and therefore wrote al-Īḍāḥ as a commentary to rectify them; second, in this book, he drew far more extensively from the works of his predecessors, especially the three aforementioned important books, and provided a much greater number of examples and proof-texts (shawāhid). The methodology in this section (on ʿIlm al-Bayān) is the same as in the first section (on ʿIlm al-Maʿānī); I have endeavored to make the translation as fluent and comprehensible as possible, while remaining largely faithful to the Arabic text. Given the author's era and the classical method of composition, I believe that for such works, a faithful translation is preferable to a free one. I have taken greater care in translating the proof-texts, especially the verses of poetry, striving to render them in a literary style that also conveys the intended rhetorical point in Persian. In the research component of the work, it is natural that I have drawn heavily, both directly and indirectly, from the commentaries and glosses on Talkhīṣ al-Miftāḥ. These include Taftāzānī's two commentaries, al-Muṭawwal and al-Mukhtaṣar; al-Maghribī's Mawāhib al-Fattāḥ; Bahāʾ al-Dīn al-Subkī's ʿArūs al-Afrāḥ; ʿAbd al-Ḥakīm al-Siyālkūtī's gloss on al-Muṭawwal; and ʿAbd al-Mutaʿāl al-Ṣaʿīdī's Bughyat al-Īḍāḥ, as well as numerous literary, linguistic, and authoritative exegetical sources, particularly al-Zamakhsharī's al-Kashshāf and al-Bayḍāwī's Anwār al-Tanzīl.

Sharaf al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd ibn Ḥammād al-Ṣanhājī, known as al-Būṣīrī, was a renowned Egyptian poet of the 7th century AH who owes his entire literary fame and stature to his prophetic panegyrics (madāʾiḥ nabawiyyah). His odes, such as al-Kawākib al-Durriyah fī Madḥ Khayr al-Bariyyah (famously known as al-Burdah), Umm al-Qurā fī Madḥ Khayr al-Warā (the Hamziyyah), and al-Qaṣīdah al-Muḍariyyah fī Madḥ Khayr al-Bariyyah, are exceptionally famous. These prophetic poems have consistently attracted the attention of researchers, commentators, translators, and even other poets. For instance, approximately seventy-nine commentaries, thirty-five takhmīs, ten tasbīʿ, one tatsīʿ, sixteen tashṭīr, two tadhyīl, and several translations into languages such as French, Tatar, Persian, and Turkish have been recorded for the Burdah ode. Similarly, eighteen commentaries, eleven takhmīs, and two tashṭīr have been documented for the Hamziyyah (Umm al-Qurā). His other panegyrics, including Dhukhr al-Maʿād, al-Qaṣīdah al-Khamriyyah, al-Qaṣīdah al-Muḍariyyah fī al-Ṣalāh ʿalā Khayr al-Bariyyah, and al-Qaṣīdah al-Lāmiyyah fī Muʿāraḍat Bānat Suʿād, have also been the subject of commentaries, takhmīs, and tashṭīr. This extensive scholarly engagement attests to al-Būṣīrī's exalted status as a poet. The Hamziyyah is a 457-verse ode in the khafīf meter, in which the poet has rendered the prophetic biography (sīrah) into verse with profound emotion, overflowing passion, and delicate imagination.

Al-Muṣṭalaḥāt al-Mutadāwalah fī al-Ṣiḥāfah al-ʿArabīyah (Common Terms in the Arab Press) is a work on political, social, cultural, athletic, military, medical, and other terminologies, which has been published in twelve editions to date. The objective of this book is to teach contemporary Arabic, facilitate the acquisition of terminology used in the Arab press, and familiarize students with the question formats of master's degree entrance examinations. Despite its concise volume, the book encompasses a vast array of terms and vocabulary. To enhance the learning process, the Persian translation has been intentionally kept close to the original Arabic text. Furthermore, repetitive content, names of individuals, and any superfluous material have been deliberately omitted. Other notable features of this book include the full vocalization (diacritics) of Arabic words and terms and the inclusion of diverse exercises in various domains.

The present work, consisting of an introduction, ten sections, and twenty-one chapters, provides a critical edition of and comprehensive annotations on the Persian commentary by Mīr Sayyid Sharīf al-Jurjānī on Ibn al-Ḥājib's al-Kāfiyah. In addition, the book includes a detailed account of the lives and works of Ibn al-Ḥājib and Mīr Sayyid Sharīf al-Jurjānī, an analysis of al-Kāfiyah and a bibliography of its various commentaries, the characteristics of al-Jurjānī's commentary, notes on textual variants, an introduction to the base manuscripts, and the methodology of the critical edition. This work is the most complete and finest Persian commentary on Ibn al-Ḥājib's renowned work on Arabic grammar, al-Kāfiyah. In his commentary, which the author himself named Sharḥ-i Gītī-pāy, the rules of Arabic morphology and syntax are presented in a scientific, eloquent, and logical manner, while avoiding superfluous points and areas of disagreement among grammarians. This work is a practical and useful resource for Persian speakers interested in learning the rules of Arabic, particularly at the postgraduate level, and stands as an exemplar of Persian scientific prose from the 9th century AH.
